BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke, AG) was founded in 1916. During the Great War BMW built aircraft engines. After WWI Germany was not allowed to manufacture aircraft, so the company branched out into other fields making industrial engines, agricultural machinery and in 1921 began the first flat twin engine.
